Pied Beauty
1877
Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889)

Glory be to God for dappled things —
     For skies of couple-colour as a brinded cow;
          For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;
Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches' wings;
     Landscape plotted & pieced — fold, fallow, & plough;
          And all trades, their gear & tackle & trim.
               All things counter, original, spare, strange;
Whatever is fickle, freckled, (who knows how?)
     With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim;
          He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change:
               Praise him.

"The cure for anything is salt water - sweat, tears, or the sea."
Tagore - Bengali poet and novelist

Mount Desert Island, off the Maine Coast

Young balsam pines in the Maine woods

The red squirrel (pictured earlier) was stripping stringy pieces of bark off this cedar tree. Gettin' ready for winter i guess.

This clever float was used in a parade in Southwest Harbor earlier in the summer of 2009

No moose were harmed in collecting these antlers (although they can injure themselves trying to get them off)

Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound.  Their webcam (below) faces south across Mt. Desert Island's western side

T.B.L.P.'s webcam (Quietside Campground is located behind the mountains to the far right in the picture)

Low tide at the Upper Town Dock

Former Southwest Harbormaster Gene Thurston's lobsterboat — the can over the exhaust pipe keeps the rain out

Lobster traps await the deep atop a Southwest Harbor float in a light fog

Maine vacation tradition: classic Downeast Maine breakfast on the southwest side Mount Desert Island

Balsam pine curly Q.  There's a really deep lesson to be learned here . . .

Shawn Clements takes his wooden lobsterboat, Beth's Desire, back to her mooring after dropping off his catch at the Manset dock

Hummer car-topped at Manset dock the day before leaving Mount Desert Island

Maine Wild Blueberry Ice Cream, gotten at Gott's Store.  Gott's . . .Store?
This, the twin lobster dinner for $18 at the Moorings Restaurant in Manset,
& 2 Quietside Cafe pizzas (in SW Harbor) comprised dinners for the week.

This might be an eagles' nest, found along the Maine Turnpike around milepost 153-154
